Soldier killed in Pak firing in Kupwara

Guns roared on the Line of Control in Kupwara district on Saturday after a silence of over seven months. A soldier was killed while foiling an infiltration bid in Machil Sector in the district, an army official said.

He said that there were reports that an infiltration bid of a group of militants is going to take place in the area. “The army unit posted there always remains vigilant to foil any bid. When the army unit found the movement around 02:00 am they started to challenge the militants while trying to cross the LoC. The Pakistan army fired upon Indian army posts to give safeguard to infiltrators,” a top army official said.

“Our vigilant soldiers respond strongly but unfortunately we lost a soldier identified as Lance Naik Rajender Singh of 57RR posted in Machil Sector but we successfully foil the bid. This is a routine exercise of Pakistan army to violate the ceasefire and target Indian army posts to give safeguard to the infiltrators but they failed to infiltrate with our strong response,” he said.

The official said that this was the first infiltration bid cum first ceasefire violation of this year in Machil Sector side which is successfully foiled. “This is the first attempt of infiltration which we foiled successfully and it was also first ceasefire violation by Pakistan army in the area, in future we will keep foiling the infiltration attempts without any loss,” top army official said.

In December last year two JCOs were killed in Pakistani forces’ firing along the LoC in Keran area of Kupwara.
