Sopore’s Mahrajpora residents decry water scarcity

Residents of Mahrajpora in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday staged a protest against the scarcity of drinking water in the area.

The protesters said that the area is suffering from ashortage of drinking water for the past several years. They blamed theauthorities of Public health engineering (PHE) department for not being able toprovide water supply to the area.

   

Residents said their locality is just one kilometer awayfrom main town Sopore but unfortunately the area has been deprived of the basicfacilities like water, electricity and road conectivity.

“Despite repeated requests to the concerned authorities, weare being forced to use contaminated water from filthy streams,” said HaleemaBegum one of the residents. She said that womenfolk of the area have to walktwo kilometres to fetch water.

When contacted to the concerned official in PHE Departmentsaid that the water pipes have been laid to the area and soon water will besupplied.
