The police chief of southern Shopian district had a narrow escape after militants attacked his vehicle near Hajipora village on Saturday.

Reports said that militants opened fire on the bullet-proof vehicle of Superintendent of Police (SP) Shopian A S Dinkar near Hajipora on Kulgam-Shopian road as he was heading towards Behibagh in Kulgam district to attend an army function.

They said that the police retaliated, resulting in a brief exchange of fire. However, the militants fled from the spot.

There was no report of any injuries.

An official said that the area has been cordoned off by the forces.
