Speedy Sumo kills 2 women on Baramulla-Kupwara highway

Two women were killed after a speedy passenger vehicle hit them at Lasser village of Rafiabad on Baramulla-Kupwara highway Tuesday, police said.

The deceased were identified as Saleema Begum, wife of Bashir Ahmad Mir and Fatima, wife of Muhammad Yousuf Mir – both residents of Wagay Mohalla, Hadipora Rafiabad.

Following the incident, the driver of the vehicle fled from the spot. “We have registered a case and a manhunt has been launched to nab the driver,” a police official said.

Witnesses said the incident happened when the deceased were returning from the field and walking along the pavement. “The speedy vehicle hit them on the pavement. Both were soaked in blood and died on the spot,” Bashir Ahmad, an eyewitness said.

As the news of the accident spread in the area, thousands of people rushed to the spot. Several women fainted on seeing the bodies in a pool of blood.

The agitated locals said Baramulla-Kupwara road has turned into a death trap as speedy vehicles mow down people frequently. “Due to the absence of traffic police, the vehicles move at a fast speed,” local residents said.
