Srinagar-Kargil highway to re-open for one-way traffic after eight days

After remaining closed for continuous eight days, the strategic Srinagar-Kargil highway will be thrown open for one way traffic today, officials said.

The highway was closed last week due to heavy snowfall following which hundreds of passenger vehicles and trucks were stranded on both sides of the highway.

Superintendent of police, traffic (rural), Muzafar Ahmed Shah told Greater Kashmir that the snow clearance work has been completed and the stranded vehicles from Kargil side will be allowed to move towards Srinagar today.

He said traffic will be allowed from Sonamarg side tomorrow once the stranded vehicles from Kargil side are cleared.

“Subjected to good weather and road conditions stranded vehicles will be allowed to move from Kargil towards Sonamarg on Friday,” IGP Traffic Basant Rath said on Twitter.
