Srinagar roads deathtraps, LG’s admin should start macadamization: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday said that the roads in Srinagar had become deathtraps and urged the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha-led administration at start macadamization work across all vital roads in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir on a priority.

A statement of BJP issued here quoted a BJP spokesman as saying that the party had received hundreds of delegations regarding the maintenance of roads in the city and other parts of Kashmir.

“The Roads and Buildings Department (R&B) should wake up from deep slumber and start working on these roads in Srinagar that have become death traps for the people and sometimes led to accidents,” he said.

The BJP spokesman said that it was unfortunate that department was not serious as last year it had started the macadamisation process before April 1 but this year the department was not visible on the ground.

“We appeal LG Manoj Sinha that work on roads in Kashmir should be started on a war-footing basis so that common people will not suffer anymore,” he said.

The spokesman said following winter season, most of the roads including major highways in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir had developed potholes, risking the lives of drivers and commuters on a daily basis.

Expressing anger over the unscheduled power cuts during the holy month of Ramdhan, the spokesman said that this was forcing Kashmiris to reel under darkness.

He said that the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) had totally failed on the ground.

“Each day, we are receiving hundreds of distress calls from people complaining about electricity cuts during Sehri and Iftaar,” the BJP spokesman said.

He appealed the LG’s administration to direct the KPDCL for immediate action on the issue so that people do not face any difficulty during the holy month of Ramadhan.
