Student beaten in Kupwara

Thrashing of a college student allegedly by the army on Monday triggered protests in degree college Sogam of Kupwara district.

Earlier students of the college held a protest at Badibhera area of Lolab valley to demand proper transport facility to the Sogam college. During the protest, students said someone pelted a stone on an army vehicle.

“The army men came down from the vehicle and beat up a student ruthlessly. He received injuries in his arm and head,” said Ishfaq Ahmad, a student.

“Action should be taken against army soldiers for beating up the student. The students were protesting peacefully for the bus service but the army men resorted to unprovoked assault,” he added.

The injured student, identified as Nasir Sajad Mir, was shifted to Handwara district hospital for treatment.

A police officer later said: “Army gave Rs 20,000 to the injured student’s family for his treatment. The matter was resolved amicably.”
