Students protest class 11 results, vandalise BOSE office

Scores of class 11 students, whose results were declared on Wednesday, demonstrated against the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) authorities at Bemina campus over poor results on Thursday.

An official said the students vandalised window panes of the secrecy department of JKBOSE.

“The students were demanding statutory marks to declare them as qualified but such marks are given only in case a student is failing in one subject,” a JKBOSE official said, adding that the limit of statutory marks is only five.

“But students failing in two or more subjects can’t be given this benefit,” he said.

The official said the students should apply for a photocopy or re-evaluation of their answer papers instead of holding protests.

“The students created law and order situation here due to which we had to call the police to control the situation,” the official said.

Around 62101 students–32227 boys and 29874– girls had appeared in the exams, out of which 39406 students–19284 boys and 20122 girls– have been declared as qualified in the results declared yesterday.

The pass percentage in exams was 63 percent: boys 60 percent and girls 67 percent.

Witnesses said the students clashed with the police that were called to the JKBOSE office.

“The clashes lasted for a few minutes but later the situation was brought under control,” an official said.

Meanwhile, several videos of the incident have gone viral on social media in which students could be heard smashing the windowpanes of the building and raising pro-Zakir Musa slogans.

The protesting students said the JKBOSE authorities were “playing with their careers”.

“The BOSE authorities have resorted to wrong marking as students having good marks have been declared fail,” the students said.
