Summer school on climate change, biodiversity concludes at KU

The two week long summer school on climate change and biodiversity concluded at the University of Kashmir (KU) here on Saturday.

The summer school, inaugurated on 24 June by Vice-ChancellorKU Prof Talat Ahmad, was organized in collaboration with Bangalore basedresearch institute and think tank Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and theEnvironment (ATREE).

   

Dean Research KU Prof Zaffar A Reishi, congratulated theparticipants and urged the organizers to hold more such programs with theUniversity in future.

“I thank the members of ATREE for choosing our universityfor this program. We need to make such programs more vibrant and useful.Through our work we can help the policy makers in formulating environmentalfriendly policies,” said Prof Reishi.

In his remarks, Prof Irshad A Nawchoo, Dean School ofBiological Sciences, said that the need of the hour is to change the attitudeof people towards the environment.

He observed, “There are clear signs of the destruction offorests and glaciers in our part of the world. Laws alone can’t preserve ourenvironment. At an individual level, we need to contribute a bit and revivewhatever we have lost.”

Welcoming the participants to the valedictory function, DrManzoor Shah, one of the organizers of the program said, “The aim of thisprogram was to expose the participants to various facets of climate change andits influence on biodiversity especially in the Himalayan range. We hope thatall the things learned in these days will be put to practice for a qualityresearch discourse.”

Dr Ankila Hiremath, another organizer of the ATREE summerschool, presented vote of thanks on the occasion.
