Thousands register for army recruitment drive in Kashmir’s border districts

Amid tensions following the car-bombing that left more than 40 paramilitary troopers dead in Kashmir, thousands of job aspirants lined up Tuesday in Gantmulla outside a territorial army camp to register for a recruitment drive.

The 5-day recruitment drive that started on Monday for youth of Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara frontier districts will continue until Friday.

“So far we have received 2500 applications and seeing the huge enthusiasm among the job aspirants, we may extend the date,” said commanding officer of 161 Territorial Army, situated at Gantmulla in Baramulla district.

“The response among the youth is tremendous. Despite the prevailing situation, the youth have descended at the recruitment drive which is being held at Gantmulla Baramulla. Seeing the overwhelming response we expect to receive more than 6000 applications at the end of recruitment drive, which is on Friday.”

Applications were invited for 111 vacancies from aspirants from the three border districts.

On Tuesday, the second day of the drive, a long queue of candidates was seen outside the 161 Territorial Army camp at Baramulla.

“I belong to a far flung village of Kupwara. We don’t have much job opportunity. A job in army will definitely allow me to feed my family of nine members,” said a job aspirant from Kupwara.
