Two militants killed in Kulgam gunfight, Internet snapped

Two militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with the government forces in Katapora village of Yaripora in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday.

A source confirmed to Greater Kashmir that two militants were killed in the gunfight. The identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained, he said, adding that two more militants might have escaped from the spot.

However, there was no immediate official confirmation on the killings.

Meanwhile, intense clashes erupted near the site of the gunfight.

Reports said that youth took to streets and pelted the forces with stones near the site of a gunfight in Katapora area. They said the forces responded by firing tear gas shells, triggering further clashes.

Earlier, a joint team of army and SOG Kulgam launched cordon and search operation in the area following inputs about the presence of militants.

As the joint team of forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering a gunfight.

Authorities have suspended the Internet service in twin districts of Anantnag and Kulgam.
