Two more militants killed in Anantnag gunfight; toll six

Two more militants were killed in a gunfight with the government forces in Srigufwara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday, taking the death toll to six. The slain include a policeman and a civilian as well.

Earlier two militants, a civilian and a policeman were killed in the gunfight that broke out in Nowshera Khiram in Srigufwara early morning.

   

An official said that all four militants who were trapped in a house were killed in the gunfight that lasted for several hours. He said the identities of the slain militants are being ascertained.

He said that the house owner Muhammad Yousuf Rather, his wife, a policeman and two army men were injured in the initial shooting.

However, Rather and the injured policeman, identified as Ashiq Hussain, succumbed. The wife of slain house owner, identified as Hafeeza has been shifted to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment.

Nearly twenty civilians were injured in the clashes that erupted soon after the gunfight began.

Reports said that youth took to streets and pelted the forces with stones to disrupt the anti-militant operation. The forces, they said, responded by firing live ammunition, pellets and tear gas.

The injured have been shifted to several hospitals in the district for treatment. One of the injured, identified as Ubaid Ahmad suffered bullet injury in his neck. He was shifted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.
