Umang Narula gets ECI award for JK polls

The award was conferred on Narula for undertaking innovate measures in election management, voter education and voter facilitation which resulted in record voter turnout in the polls.

The Election Commission of India Sunday awarded Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Electoral Officer Umang Narula for smooth conduct of 2014 parliamentary and Assembly polls in the State.

Narula was conferred prestigious award by the former President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam, at an impressive function held at New Delhi today. The function was attended by top officials of Election Commission of India including Chief Election Commissioner HS Brahma.

 

The award was conferred on Narula for undertaking innovate measures in election management, voter education and voter facilitation which resulted in record voter turnout in the polls.

 

Narula is widely credited for smooth conduct of 2014 State polls which were described as the most transparent , free and fair polls after 1977 Assembly polls. The elections in Jammu and Kashmir had been previously marred with allegations of rigging.

 

An IAS officer of 1989 batch, Narula has served at important positions in State and centre before being picked up by ECI for CEO’s job in July 2012.

 

He has served in Union Ministers of Tourism and Culture, Ministry of Home Affairs at Centre besides as commissioner secretary of Rural Development and Industries & Commerce in State .

 

Apart from Narula, District Election Officer Kathua, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary was also given Best State Award for his performance in the field of electoral inclusion, reforms and best practices for voter awareness and conduct of Parliamentary elections.
