The people in the town have urged the district administration to initiate steps to clean the choked drains.
Locals said that the main sewer along Tehsil road Baramulla is blocked since last several months, with the result the filth accumulated in the drain has started to float on to the national highway, besides raising stink.
“The water of several other sewers passes through this main drain. The choked drain has made our life miserable” said Fayaz Ahmad, a shopkeeper on Tehsil road Baramulla. “During the moderate rainfall, drain water enters our shop and it takes us half the day to drain it”.
He said the sweepers deposit the garbage from the road into the drain which further blocks the flow.
Another shopkeeper Altaf Hussain blamed the choking on the closed drain along the national highway. “The drain has not been cleaned ever since it was constructed. How can authorities construct a drain by closing its exit? The authorities must hold the executing agency responsible and take measures to make the drain useful” said Hussain.
