Uri cylinder blast: 2 more succumb, toll 4

Two more injured in the Uri LPG cylinder blast succumbed at SKIMS hospital in Srinagar on Monday, taking the toll in the incident to four. On Sunday, mother and daughter who had suffered burns in the incident had died at the hospital.

Confirming two more deaths an official said the deceasedwere sisters. “All the injured were brought with around 70 percent burninjuries. They were provided best available treatment. However, two of themsuccumbed on Sunday while two on Monday morning” said Dr Farooq Jan, MedicalSuperintendent, SKIMS Srinagar.

   

A week ago, six members of a family including a mother andher four daughters and a son were critically injured in a blast at Lagama Uriin north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The injured were rushed to SDH Uri, from where they wereshifted to SKIMS hospital Srinagar for specialised treatment.

A close relative of the family said that the incidentoccurred when the cooking gas cylinder was placed on the landing of stairs andnot inside the kitchen. “It was just five kg LPG gas cylinder and had justaround three kgs of gas inside when it exploded. The family was inside kitchenand when the explosion happened. They ran towards the corridor where they werecaught in the fire” said Bashir Ahmad, relative of the bereaved family members.

The incident has left the entire area of Uri towndevastated. The family actually belonged to a border village Silkote which isclose to the line of control. As per reports, the family had recently shiftedto Lagama where they had constructed a single story house.

The deceased were buried at their ancestral graveyard atSilkote.

“It is just like a doomsday for the entire village. We allwere busy with the Eid preparations but this incident has left us alldevastated” said Ashiq Hussain, a local resident.

Meanwhile, the senior Superintendent of police Baramullasaid that an investigation has been initiated in the matter. “The incident hasinflicted many casualties despite cylinder being just 5 kg with gas alreadyexhausted. The gas cylinder will be examined for its quality besides otheraspects will be taken into account during the investigation” said the SSP AbdulQayoom.
