The tragedy of the Uri family which lost four members in a gas cylinder explosion on May 27 shows no sign of ending as the only son of the family, a six year old boy who along with his mother and five other siblings was injured, succumbed at AIIMS on Saturday, taking the death toll to five.
Ubaid Ahmad, 6, had been shifted from the Children’sHospital Srinagar to AIIMS Delhi on the directions of the Governoradministration for advanced treatment.
Earlier, his mother Parveena Akther (35) and three sistersSaima Bano (18), Sabeena Bano (16) and Shaishta Bano (14) succumbed to injurieslast week.
On May 27, a 5 kg LPG cylinder exploded inside a residentialhouse at Lagama Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, injuring six membersof the family critically. The injured received severe burn injuries and wereshifted to Srinagar hospital, where four of them succumbed to their injuries.
The gas cylinder explosion had occurred at a time when thecooking gas cylinder was placed on the landing of stairs. The family was insidekitchen when the explosion happened and were caught in the fire in the corridorof the house.
The bereaved family belong to Silkote, a border village,which is close to the Line of Control in Uri. The family had recently shiftedto Lagama where they had constructed a single story house.
On the direction of the Governor, the Deputy CommissionerBaramulla had handed over a cheque of eight lakh fifty thousand rupees to thehead of the victims’ family.
