Uri searches called off, no attack on army camp: Police

Speculation ran high for hours Monday about an attack on an army artillery unit in Uri when a sentry opened fire after noticing suspicious movement around the camp.

A sentry deployed at an artillery unit at Rajarwani in the frontier Uri area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district opened fire suspecting an impending attack by suspected militants.

“There was no firing from the other side. The area was later cordoned and search operation launched. Two persons spotted near a stream were detained for questioning,” a police spokesperson said.

Following the firing, speculation ran high throughout the day that militants mounted an attack on the camp.

However, police later dismissed the speculative reports as baseless.

The search operation was later called off.
