Water shortage triggers protest in Sopore village

The residents of Warpora area of Sopore on Tuesday morning took to streets against the Jal Shakti department for failing to provide them with the adequate water supply.

Scores of residents including women assembled and blocked the Sopore-Bandipora road at Warpora. They started shouting slogans against Jal Shakti department and were demanding regular and restoration of water supply to their area.

   

The protesters said they are facing immense hardships due to acute shortage of water supply from the last few months. They alleged that officials in the department have failed to provide water supply to them in these hot summer days.

“We are being forced to fetch water from far away dirty streams and river, which possess grave threat of acquiring dangerous water borne diseases among residents particularly childrens,” said a protester Shameema begum.

Meanwhile, police reached the spot and assured protesters that their demands will be taken up with the concerned authorities.  After the assurances, the protesters dispersed peacefully.

Meanwhile officials in Jal Shakti department Sopore said that during the summer season and the present drought situation the pressure of water remain low which causes shortage of water to some areas.  The officials claimed that they have already supplied water to affected areas through water tankers.
