Week-long workshop on flood management begins at NIT

Water Resources Management Centre, NIT Srinagar Monday launched a week-long workshop on flood management with focus on Jhelum basin.

In his welcome address the coordinator of the workshop ProfMA Lone highlighted importance of the program.

   

The inaugural speech was given by chief patron of theworkshop Director NIT, Prof RakeshSehgal. He expressed pleasure in being partof the program, describing it as need of the hour.

“Changing climate and 2014 floods need to be deliberated anddebated to reach to possible outcomes that can stop or prevent any suchcalamity in future,” he said.

The Chief Engineer I&FC, Er AK Sharma, who was alsopresent at the inaugural session, briefed the audience about steps taken bygovernment in aftermath of the 2014 floods especially the dredging projectsthat are underway to increase the carrying capacity of the Jhelum River.

“The Dogripora-Wullar alternate flood spill channel willincrease the carrying capacity from 8000 cusecs to 25000 cusecs”, he added.

Er Mir JavedJaffar, who was Chief Engineer of the Irrigationand the Flood control Dept. during the 2014-flood gave a detailed account of theground reality of that flood. Prof MS Bhat, Dean School of Geology and EarthSciences, stressed upon the need for adoption of a holistic approach for floodmanagement.

The coordinator of the sponsoring scheme, TEQIP-III, Prof MFWani criticized various agencies for a poor implementation of schemes andmeasures on the ground.

He also spoke about encroachments inside the Dal Lake andother water bodies and ways and means to deal with it
