Bandipora woman who allegedly set herself ablaze dies

A woman from north Kashmir’s Bandipora district who allegedly set herself ablaze yesterday succumbed at a hospital in Srinagar on Saturday, officials said.

The woman, who is survived by three children, had suffered 90 per cent burn injuries.

The woman’s family has alleged that she was “provoked” to take this extreme step due to repeated “abuse and harassment” by her in-laws.

Originally from Ahuitmulla village, the woman was at her in-law’s home at Chitthaybandi when she set herself ablaze, an official said.

The witnesses also said that a hand to hand brawl broke out in the hospital premises between the two families where she was being treated initially on Friday.

A police official said that they have registered a First information report 25/2020 under section 309IPC: the attempt to murder and other relevant sections while the investigation is on.

Meanwhile, the body was handed over to the family for the last rites on Saturday evening.
