Kupwara duo found dead inside stranded vehicle on Srinagar-Jammu highway; cold suspected as cause of death

Two travelers hailing from north Kashmir’s Kupwara district stranded on the Srinagar-Jammu highway due to fresh snowfall were found dead inside a load carrier they were traveling in at Banihal area of Ramban district Sunday morning, officials said.

The cause of their death has not yet been ascertained even as the prevailing cold is suspected to have killed them. 

   

The duo identified by officials as Shabir Ahmed Mir son of Abdul Rashid Mir and Majid Gulzar Mir son Mohammad Gulzar both residents of Kralpora village of Kupwara, were found unconscious inside the load carrier vehicle bearing number JK-09B/ 7358 at railway station Banihal this morning, officials said. 

They said the duo was shifted to sub district hospital Banihal where doctors declared them brought dead.

One of the doctors at the SDH who received the duo’s bodies told Greater Kashmir that the cause of their death was not yet established as their postmortem reports were still awaited. 

Meanwhile, families of the two deceased men reached Banihal from north Kashmir’s Kupwara to take their bodies even as stranded passengers protested against the deaths accusing authorities for failing to clear the highway for traffic in time. 

Vehicular traffic on the highway was suspended on Saturday morning due to snowfall and slippery conditions across the Jawahar tunnel.
