Security forces suspend Kawoosa operation due to darkness; ‘lone militant might have escaped’

Security forces on Monday night suspended the anti-militant operation in Kawoosa area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, even as reports suggested that the “lone militant” trapped in the area might have escaped.

Police said that a gunfight broke out in Kawoosa Khalisa village of Narbal in central Kashmir’s Budgam district after a joint team of police, army and the CRPF launched a cordon-and-search-operation there.

“Encounter has started at Kawoosa area of Budgam. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” the police tweeted earlier in the day.

Quoting official sources, news agency GNS reported that after the initial firefight, there was a lull which continued until this report was being filed.

“Perhaps there was a lone (militant) who managed to escape,” it said while quoting the sources.

However, sources said that the operation has not been called off but was suspended due to darkness, said the report.
