The residents of Tral in Pulwama district on Saturday appealed authorities to ensure requisite medical staff at local Primary Health Center as dearth of the same is taking toll on health care of people in the area.

New Type Primary Health Centre (NTPHC) located at Batagund village as per locals sans required number of doctors and paramedics thereby putting patients lives at risk.

Established in 1985, NTPHC caters to Taki, Naner, Gulshanpora, Gaang, Seer and Kuchmullah areas, however only one doctor posted at the center is making vast population suffer, since he is unable to cater to a huge rush of patients.

Locals said center’s equipment is lying defunct, while poor patients are forced to shed money on tests from private diagnostic centers. They also said due to unavailability of gynecologist at the center, expecting mothers have to face tough time and at times they develop complicacies.

“Only one doctor is posted at the center…The patients have to conduct tests at private diagnostic centers. Poor patients are forced to shed big bucks on these tests. Despite taking up issue with the concerned administration, nothing substantial has been done in this regard,” said Suja Reshi, a local.

Another local of Tral said: “What for is this PHC if it doesn’t help us in anyway? The hospital has ambulance but without driver”.

When contacted Block medical officer (BMO) Tral Dr. Bashir Ahmed Malik said there is not much staff available with the health department which can be deployed to NTPHCs. “Our main SDH Tral is grappling with staff problem and it is impossible to manage the full-fledged staff for NTPHCs. However, I will still try to depute one female doctor to the health centre as soon as possible, “he said
