People protest absence of medical staff

Kangan, Aug 25: Two students drowned in a stream at Kulan, 30 kilometres from here on Saturday.
 Reports said Asif Ahmed Rather s/o Muhammad Yousuf Rather and Tauseef Ahmed Wani s/o Abdul Hameed Wani of Kulan, both residents of Kulan students of class fourth drowned while taking a bath.
 According to the locals, both the boys were “alive” when they were retrieved from the stream. “We rushed them to a primary health centre, but we found it closed; if doctors had been there they (boys) could have survived,” the family members of the deceased boys told Greater Kashmir.
 They claimed that both of them died on way to Kangan hospital.
 As soon as the word about the incident spread in the area, people in large numbers took to the roads and staged a protest on Srinagar-Leh highway against the absence of the medical staff.
 Later Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ganderbal G N Bodha reached the spot and pacified the protesters.
 “I have placed two doctors and three paramedical staff members under suspension for remaining absent from duty,” the DC told Greater Kashmir.
