Beerwah (Budgam), Jan 29: Ayesha Begum wife of late Syed Ali Shah, founder of Anjuman-e-Mazhar-ul-Haq, passed away at her Sodhipora residence here today after brief illness. She was 90. She is survived by two sons – Syed Abdul Lateef, Mirwaiz and Khateeb of Jamia Masjid here, Syed Abdur-Rauf, district planning officer of Education Department, Budgam – and a daughter.
Syed Ali Shah had passed away over 30 years ago. His Anjuman had founded a missionary primary school in 1934 to impart education to children, particularly from poor families. The institution has grown into a high school now which provides both religious and secular education.
Apart from playing a significant role in promotion of literacy in the area, Maulana Ali Shah was a prominent religious scholar and social activist guiding people in their day-to-day life. “He used to hold court to hear and resolve family disputes. In fact, the police too would seek his consent before registering the FIR about any case,” said a resident, adding the administration had little role in the local affairs those days.
Thousands of people joined the jinaza of late Ayesha who was laid to rest in the ancestral graveyard. Several separatist leaders and activists of various religious, social and political organizations, administration officials and prominent citizens joined the funeral prayers.
They included National Front chairman and Hurriyat Conference (M) leader, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, JKSM chief and Hurriyat (M) leader, Zafar Akbar Bhat, Deputy Commissioner, Budgam, Muhammad Rafi, the Chief Education Officer, Budgam, besides the local MLA, Dr Muhammad Shafi Wani, and other political leaders.

In his condolence message, he expressed sympathy with the bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul.
