Jammu to Srinagar traffic on highway today: IGP
Srinagar, Jan 22: Kashmir’s upper reaches received fresh snowfall Thursday, leading to closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway for the day. Officials however said the highway shall remain open on Friday “strictly” for one-way traffic.
The 300-km highway—the only road link connecting Kashmir with rest of the world—was closed Wednesday evening after it started snowing at Jawahir Tunnel and Patnitop, officials said.
Inspector General of Police, Traffic, Muneer Ahmad Khan said stranded vehicles on highway were cleared. “From tomorrow there will be one-way traffic on the highway, from Jammu to Srinagar (on Friday),” he told Greater Kashmir.
Khan said the decision has been taken to ensure safety and security of commuters.
Meanwhile, Meteorological department officials here said scores of areas in Kashmir received fresh snowfall.
The ski resort of Gulmarg received 1.5 feet snow during the night while as the temperature there was recorded at minus 4.0 degree Celsius, a drop of a degree from the previous night, they said.
Srinagar, the officials said, received 3.3 mm rain during the night while as the temperature recorded was a low of 1.8 degree Celsius. “1 cm snow was recorded in Pahalgam,” they said.
Officials said Qazigund received 2 cm snow and a low of 0.2 degrees while as Kokernag recorded the minimum of minus 0.5 degree Celsius. The town received 2 cm of snow during the night, they added.
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded 2.2 cm snow and registered a minimum of 0.4 degree Celsius.
Leh recorded minus 6.2 degrees Celsius and Kargil town minus 5 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperatures Thursday, officials said.
JAMMU BUREAU ADDS
Jammu region continued to reel under cold wave with moderate rains and snow for the second consecutive day Thursday. The Indian Meteorological Department predicts more precipitation and snowing in next 24 hours.
IMD officials said many towns in mountainous Chenab Valley and Pir Panchal received moderate snow after overnight rains and the trend may continue for next 24 hours, leading to further dip in minimum temperature.
Officials said Bhaderwah and Banihal ranges of Chenab Valley witnessed four centimeter snowfall while at Batote received 2 centimeter snow.
Rain and snowfall was also reported at isolated places in border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Pir Panchal area.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (SP) Highways, Sanjay Kotwal said: “As many as 550 stranded vehicles were cleared from the highway today.”
However, officials said over 1000 passengers are stranded at General Bus Stand Jammu since the closure of Highway on Wednesday evening.
TRAFFIC DEPT ISSUES GUIDELINES
According to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Traffic, one way movement of traffic will be in force on Jammu-Srinagar Highway from 23.01.2015 till further orders.
Accordingly, on up traffic days, all kinds of passenger service vehicles and Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) (bound for valley from Jammu side) are required to cross TCP Nagrota by 11.00 hours and TCU Udhampur upto 12.30 hours only. “Similarly, cut off timing for heavy vehicles and load carriers (valley bound) shall be 10.00 hours at Nagrota and 12.00 hours at TCP Udhampur, beyond which no vehicle shall be allowed to proceed for onwards journey towards Kashmir valley,” an official spokesman said.
“On down-traffic days all kinds of passenger service vehicles and LMVs (bound for Jammu) are required to cross TCP Pantha Chowk by 10.00 hours. Lower Munda (Qazigund) upto 12.00 hours and Jawahar Tunnel upto 13.30 hours only for onward journey towards Jammu. Similarly, the cut off timing for heavy vehicles and load carries (bound for Jammu) shall be 09.00 hours at Pantha Chowk, 11.30 hours at Levdora (Qazigund) and 13.00 hours at Jawahar Tunnel beyond which no vehicle, whatsoever, shall be allowed to proceed beyond lower Munda and Jawahar Tunnel for onward journey.”
