Militant killed in Sopore gunfight: Police

Srinagar, Jan 14: An unidentified militant was killed in a gunfight in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday, police said. The killing triggered massive anti-India and pro-freedom protests in the area.
Police said on specific information about presence of militants in SofiHamam area of Sopore, a joint team of Army’s 52 Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operation Group of J&K Police and 177 Battalion CRPF launched a search operation on Wednesday morning.
“The joint party came under fire near the house of Tariq Sofi of SofiHamam. The fire was retaliated and in the firefight one unidentified militant was killed. The house of Sofi also suffered partial damage,” a police official said.
Soon after the gunfight ended, youth in groups pelted stones on government forces. The youth chanted pro-freedom slogans following which contingents of police arrived at the spot and dispersed the protestors. The area observed a complete shutdown.
While police said it was yet to ascertain the identity of the slain militant, Army said it has been established.
“The militant killed was Abu Sufiyaz of LeT,” an Army spokesman said.
