What was our fault? Ask Gamroo residents

Gamroo (Bandipora), July 6: Riyaz Ahmad Sheikh of Gamroo is a dejected face after his house was gutted on July 2 firing incident. Riyaz alleges that Army intentionally set their houses on fire and there was no militant hiding in the area.
“Troops of 14-Rashtriya Rifles, 90 battalion BSF and police cordoned off our village on July 2 and started house-to-house search for two hours. After some time they (troops) started firing and ordered us to leave our houses immediately. The troops set ten houses and five cow sheds on fire without any reasons,” Riyaz alleged.
People who lost their houses in the fire are: Khazir Muhammad Sheikh son of Hamzah Sheikh, Muhammad Ashraf Sheikh, Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, Riyaz Ahmad Sheikh sons of Khazir Muhammad, Muhammad Rajab Sheikh son of Hamzah Sheikh, Ghulam Hasan Sheikh son of Mhera Sheikh, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Ghulam Rasool Mir sons of Khalil Mir, Ghulam Qadir Dar son of Abdur Rehman, Sonaullah Dar son Abdur Rehman.
The villages said that their entire life’s belongings has been ruined in the fire and “we are homeless now.”
“After the incident, next day Army told us that two militants were killed in the encounter. But we don’t know whether there was any militant present or not,” the villagers said.
100 people have become homeless in the incident and they allege that no one at the helm of affairs have bothered to visit the place and see their condition.
