Monsoon likely to hit Kerala on June 4: Skymet

Monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala on June 4, three days after its normal onset date, marking the official commencement of the rainy season in the country, private weather forecaster Skymet said Tuesday.

The normal onset date for monsoon over Kerala is June 1.Skymet said monsoon will be “below normal” in the country with a LongPeriod Average (LPA) of 93 per cent and an error margin of five per cent.  “It seems that initial advancement ofmonsoon over peninsular India is going to be slow,” Skymet CEO Jatin Singhsaid.

   

Risk remains high for Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal,while it will be marginal for Northeast India, Skymet said. Hilly states ofJammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to performbetter than the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi- NCR, the Skymetsaid.Central India is likely to receive rainfall of91 per cent of the LPA. Rainfall in Vidarbha, Marathwada, west Madhya Pradeshand Gujarat will be “poorer than normal”.
