Triple talaq Bill to worsen plight of Muslim women: Hasnain Masoodi

National Conference Friday vehemently opposed the triple talaq Bill in the Lok Sabha, saying the bill will worsen the plight of Muslim women.

Participating in the debate and contesting the rulingparty’s claim that the Muslim women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill2019 was to bring relief, the party’s Member Parliament, Hasnain Masoodi, said,”The proposed Bill is insensitive to gender issues. Therefore, the law willworsen of the plight of Muslim women in the country.”

   

Emphasizing that the Bill was a piece of class legislationas it picked up only one community, he said, “Therefore the law is notpermissible under the Constitution.”

Masoodi, while refuting the claim of the union Law Ministerthat the Parliament was competent to enact the law, said, “Once triple talaqwas held void and illegal by the Supreme Court there was no need to enact thelaw.”

“The net result of holding triple talaq void and illegal wasthat the marriage subsisted and relationship of husband and wife continuednotwithstanding triple talaq and making triple talaq punishable with three yearimprisonment would make the family fall apart,” he added.
