Sogam, July 24: Rich tributes were paid to former minister, late Ghulam Nabi Wani (Sogami) on his 28th death anniversary. A large number of people offered fateha khwani and flowers at the ancestral graveyard of the late leader here.
Later, thousands of people thronged Sogam from various parts of Kupwara district and attended a function, organized in the memory of the late leader, who has contributed immensely towards development of this remote area.
The minister of state for Housing and Urban Development, PHE, Tourism and Revenue and Relief, who is also the grandson of late Wani, Nasir Aslam Wani was the chief guest on the occasion.
The MLA, Handwara and senior vice-president, NC, Ch. Muhammad Ramzan, the MLA, Langate, Er. Abdul Rashid, provincial president, NC, Ali Muhammad Dar and former MLC, Nasir Khan were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Aslam said the late leader had been instrumental in changing the socio-economic profile of the far-flung area. He said government will go whole hog in realizing the dream the late leader had envisioned for developing the region. “Government’s hands were tied because of the modal code of conduct on account of Parliamentary elections. Now that the elections are over, we will now go full throttle in achieving our goal of providing all basic amenities like water for drinking and irrigation, power and better road connectivity in the region so that a new era of development is ushered in,” he said, adding the government would initiate measures to bring the beautiful district of Kupwara on the tourism map. “We have virgin spots like Chandigam and valleys like Lolab and Bungus that have vast potential for tourism. This potential will be tapped to the fullest extent,” he said, adding that he will sit with the district administration to review pace of development works in the region.
The minister said tourist infrastructure at several places would be developed so that visitors start coming to Kupwara to enjoy its scenic splendor. “Kupwara offers vast opportunities for tourism,” he said, adding the government will prepare a comprehensive plan to kick-start tourism-related activities in the district.
Laying stress on providing water for drinking and irrigation purposes to the people of Lolab and other places during peak summer season.
Earlier, the minister was greeted at several places en route Sogam and garlanded. He met several delegations of people and assured them that the government is committed to improve pace of development in the frontier district. This was Nasir first visit to Sogam after being sworn in as minister.
Addressing the gathering, Ch. Ramzan recalled the services of late Sogami, which he rendered to the people of the district. He said the late leader was a torchbearer for the people and politicians of the district and added that it was his great social work for which the people of the region remember him even after 28 years of his death.
