A major societal challenge

An increasing trend among youngsters settling overseas iswhat Kashmir is witnessing. Boys simply prefer to move out in quest for a job,or to earn more. This one directional approach makes them find the jobs andmeans of living in different states of the world; all depending upon choice andavailability. Who is not attracted to glamour and fat cheques? Obviously a lot;however, for another big lot these things mean life.

A story that a friend shared a few days back makes me writea little on this subject. An elderly couple in the uptown wished to donatetheir entire property to charity and approached for the same. On paying a visitto the couple it was learnt that both were bed ridden in a room of a palatialhouse. It was neighbors who used to serve them essential meals as they weredependent for the same. They have enough money, well settled kids outside, continuous flow of post retirement pension; however, despite having their ownkids, no one is around when they needed them the most. The owner told the charitygroup that there was no dearth of money and when he opened a cupboard there wasplenty of it inside. Finally he pleaded that he will be donating all his wealthprovided, in turn, the charity group took care of them.

It is a fact that after you finish your studies, all thatmatters is to find a descent earning; that is what we call a job. On the onehand there are little avenues around to get a dream job and on the other, theever increasing hunger of earning more makes boys move out and settle anywhere.Settling abroad fulfills one aspect; you get the desired means of earning. However, it comes with a baggage of issues that are turning out very dreadfulfor the society in times to come. Young men settled abroad, barring a littleexception, have almost all roads back home blocked. That is where it is turning out a major social challenge and in the years to come it will show itsimpact on a larger scale.

Settling overseas satisfies as one finds himself wellplaced, with a bright future ahead. With the passage of time it begins to showthe impact as you will see various issues surfacing that people in general tryto get acclimatized with having no other options left. The modern means ofconnectivity –  social networking,  video calls, and more – help a little in thebeginning as people feel that technology may help to overcome the distance thathas left the dependents miles away. But the demand of job in this competitiveworld is too tiring, squeezing the space for social and moral obligations withevery passing day. Young men get busier with the time and back home parentsturn fragile with the same speed with no one around to look after them. It ishere the real impact can be witnessed.

It has been found that this settling abroad is usually oneway traffic; you rarely return to attend to your moral obligations and thistrend is increasing. Practically speaking, the nation gives birth to precious human resource, nourishes it, andtakes best care of it. When there is the time to deliver, this resource does soin the alien land far away from where it was born and brought up. What is leftback home is the fragile group of elderly people, totally dependent. There isno doubt that you need to interact with different societies and exchange ideasto develop in different fields of life. However, it needs to be a well thoughtout, and fairly planned, where individual needs and that of the nation arebalanced.
