Editorial | Lift them up

Srinagar, as a city, is immersed in problems. In certain case government is prompt to addressed the problem, while in others the response from the government is tepid. But there are some problems that ave been completely neglected. Among them is the case of the underprivileged, marginalised, and economically distressed people, living in this city. Usually when we talk of poor and marginalised, it takes us to far flung areas. Our mind never goes to the people living in big towns, and the city itself. Hence they receive less, or no attention. But the fact of the matter is that there is a significant number of people living in the city whose lives are miserable, to put is bluntly. Unfortunately, Srinagar never comes in discussion from this point of concern. Our discussions on this city cover politics, economy, development, and governance, but never this burning problem, though that is badly needed.

There is need to take up matters that directly hit the poor and marginalised people living in the Srinagar city. It must inform our education policies, the distribution of education infrastructure. Likewise, in the health sector, the distribution of human and material resource need to factor this thing in. These are the people who are left out of the network of schemes made for the rural, and peripheral poor. Otherwise the condition of the urban poor is no less pathetic than the poor elsewhere. The administration needs a special focus on this, introducing schemes and development projects that particularly target the urban poor. We are going through a month that infuses the spirit of charity in us. People, in this month, spend on others with an extra zeal. Our society comes alive in this month in the sense that it starts taking care of the poor and distressed. There are many who do it at a collective level. For all those individuals, and groups, who come forward in this month and spend wealth on the needy, it is important to look into this facet of this city. There are many families that need to be helped. So as a society we must come forward to make a difference to the lives of these people, by extending financial help to them in this month.
