Ganderbal takes lead in electrification of government schools

Ganderbal has taken a lead in electrification of all government schools, among all districts. The electrification of the schools was carried by the district administration in collaboration with power development department (PDD) under Saubhagya scheme- a government of India project announced by Prime Minister (PM) in September 2017. According to official figures there are around 574 government schools in the district which include 348 primary schools, 171 middle schools, 39 high schools and 16 government higher secondary schools.  “All the schools have been electrified in the district with the intervention of the PDD and district administration,” said Muhammad Gayas ud Din, deputy chief education officer who was also holding additional charge of chief education officer (CEO) in the district till last week. “We have three KGBVs also in the district which have been electrified as well,” he said. The school education department is mulling to complete electrification of all schools across Kashmir by end of July this year. The process to provide power to each schools was started barely three months after students of 12th grade were forced to write their annual examination papers under solar lights, smart phone torches and even candles, in bone-chilling condition, in November last year, on a dark cloudy day. The department had convened several meeting with the PDD to achieve 100 percent electrification of all the government schools across the state. “In Ganderbal we started the process earlier with the support of former deputy commissioner Piyush Singla who took it as priority to electrify all the schools in the district,” deputy CEO said. The PDD has decided to install 7 kw meters in each higher secondary school, 5 kw in high schools, 3 kw in middle school and 1 kw in primary schools in all the districts. The department has also agreed to install service line along with MCB for which the cost will be reimbursed by school education department.
