Govt grants more financial powers to SKIMS Director

In a step towards granting greater financial power to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), State government has raised the spending limit of its purchases committee to Rs 20 crore. Recently, state government re-constituted the purchase sub-committee of SKIMS, five years after it was constituted.

The new committee headed by director SKIMS, Prof Omar Javed Shah has 13 members, all high ranking officials of the institute. Meanwhile the purchase sub-committee will have powers to affect purchases up to Rs 20 crore at a time.

This is a huge leap from the existing financial independence which permitted spending up to Rs 2 crore. An official communication from SKIMS said that the approval for reconstitution of sub-committee and increase of financial powers was granted by Governor, the chairperson of SKIMS governing body, last month.

Senior officials at SKIMS hailed the government decision, calling it a huge leap towards financial independence of the autonomous Institute.

Director SKIMS, Prof Omar Javed Shah said the decision would have far-reaching impact on SKIMS and would help expedite various on-going projects. “We are now in a position to take bigger financial decisions and hopefully, this will help us take many projects to logical conclusion at a better pace,” he said.
