PM’s visit: A ground-level perspective

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Srinagar to inaugurate developmental projects in the Kashmir Valley signals the dawn of a new era of growth and prosperity for the region. His intricate balance between honoring regional aspirations and integration with dignity lays a robust groundwork for the economic revitalization of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

Initially met with skepticism and contrasting ideologies, the Prime Minister’s initiatives faced apprehension among J&K’s populace. However, through populist transformative measures, his government has not only convinced critics but also significantly enhanced accessibility and efficiency in governance, showcasing a tangible commitment to improving lives.

Among the key highlights of Prime Minister Modi’s recent initiatives is the dedication to the nation of the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme, an investment of approximately Rs 5000 crores. Additionally, the launch of 52 tourism sector projects under the Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD Scheme, worth more than Rs 1400 crores, underscores the government’s emphasis on harnessing the region’s tourism potential. The dedication of projects like the ‘Integrated Development of Hazratbal Shrine’ in Srinagar and the announcement of tourist destinations under the Challenge Based Destination Development Scheme further accentuate the government’s commitment to holistic development.

PM Modi’s emphasis on positioning Jammu and Kashmir as a premier tourist destination will be a game changer for the youth. By leveraging the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness, these efforts hold the promise of not only stimulating the local economy but also creating ample job opportunities. The government’s relentless focus on bolstering tourism infrastructure and connectivity sets the stage for J&K to emerge as a global tourist hotspot. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives represent a decisive step towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people of J&K.

In all this, peace remains paramount, and the reduction of street violence in the Kashmir Valley to zero stands as a monumental achievement. While individuals are free to disagree with Prime Minister Modi’s political organization, his work as an administrator and his vision for positioning Jammu and Kashmir deserve recognition. His efforts have instilled hope among the youth, inspiring them to strive for self-reliance and contribute meaningfully to the region’s development.

For the first time, Kashmir Valley served as a platform for the launch of national-level schemes that will benefit people across India. Beyond these significant projects, the visit brought a semblance of normalcy, including the continuation of communications, which was a stark contrast to previous visits by the Prime Minister or Home Minister, during which all communications were halted, including basic internet connectivity.

Amidst these transformative changes, the political environment in Jammu and Kashmir, perpetuated by traditional parties, remains rife with false narratives. This environment often stifles the youth’s ability to freely choose a progressive political course of action.

Political opponents of PM may hesitate to acknowledge the developmental strides made and often cite the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status as a justification for overlooking the region’s transformation. This decision sparked intense debate and disagreement among various political factions. While individuals may hold divergent views on the political ramifications of this action, it is imperative to note that instead of engaging in political negotiations with the central government, regional parties in J&K opted to contest the decision in the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, this approach did not foster dialogue or understanding; rather, it led to an impasse. The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India adjudicated upon the matter, and upheld its legality and constitutional validity.

In contrast, the people of Ladakh demonstrated unity and reason, effectively communicating with the central government to address their concerns of seeking constitutional safeguards. Mainstream parties in Jammu and Kashmir failed to effectively advocate for the region’s interests and engage in constructive dialogue with the central government. The political atmosphere post August 2019, underscored the necessity for sincere negotiations and political maturity from all stakeholders. Despite the strong mandate given to the BJP by the people of India, regional leaders should have approached negotiations with sincerity, setting aside rigid political posturing for the greater good of the people.

Driven by the Prime Minister’s vision and the proactive decisions of the Lieutenant Governor, the transformation of a common man’s life for the better is what truly matters. In quest of political manoeuvring, the political parties often lose sight of the ground realities faced by ordinary citizens. In contrast, the architects of progress are the grassroots leaders, including District Development Council (DDC) members, former members of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI), and Urban Local Bodies (ULB), from these very established regional parties. These leaders actively engage in the Prime Minister’s initiatives, empowering their communities, and catalyzing positive change.

The undeniable truth is that the common man has benefitted from the government’s initiatives. Whether it’s through improved healthcare access, expanded insurance coverage, or the generation of employment opportunities in the private sector, the impact on the ground is visible.

While it’s acknowledged that transformation cannot occur overnight, it’s essential to remain optimistic about the future and focus on continuous improvement rather than dwelling in past. Time is of essence in this endeavor for progress. While there may still be gaps to bridge and challenges to overcome, the youth must step forward and take charge, recognizing that the true torchbearers of change are not the elites but the ordinary individuals on the ground.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and commitment of J&K Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha have injected renewed hope and optimism into Jammu and Kashmir. Through strategic initiatives and visionary policymaking, he has laid a robust foundation for the region’s economic resurgence and development. With continued participation and collective efforts, the people of J&K can chart a course towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
