Kashmiri doctor discovers new type of hernia

A Kashmiri doctor has “identified and classified” a new typeof hernia and his “unique” work has been incorporated in latest issue ofInternational Journal of Surgery Case Reports. Named as “Jammu, Kashmir andLadakh hernia” this “unique hernia” has two direct hernia on same side,separated by anomalous inferior epigastric artery besides having tripleindirect hernia. The double pantaloon hernia was the first such hernia reportedin world, according to the doctor who is working with directorate of healthservices Kashmir. The work has been published in June issue of Elsiever journalInternational Journal of Surgery Case Reports under the name of Dr Imtiaz Wani.Dr Wani works with department of surgery at Directorate of Health ServicesKashmir. The case report is named “Triple indirect hernia, double direct herniaand double pantaloon hernia (Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh hernia). Dr Wani saidthat with this discovery, the hernia classification would be modified and thename of the State engraved in medical literature. “I wanted to name the herniaafter the unique identity and unity of our state,” he said.

   

Unique cardiac procedure performed at Srinagar Hospital

A team of medicos carried out a complex heart procedure ontwo patients here, an intervention that is usually performed outside the State.A successful retrograde PCI (coronary artery chronic total occlusionangioplasty) of two patients was performed at Khyber hospital last week.Coronary angioplasty of chronic total occlusion is the last frontier ofcoronary interventions, a handout by the Hospital said. “The organisation ofthis retrograde CTO workshop has made our State to take lead in the mostcomplex coronary interventions. This workshop was organized by Dr Syed Maqboolwho along with Dr Arun Kalyana Sundaram(a CTO expert) performed theseprocedures,” the handout said. Dr Maqbool said that antegrade opening of thesechronic total occlusions is a fairly common procedure with only success rate of70% in best expert hands. “Retrograde opening is a very complex procedurerequiring great skill but has a success rate of 95%. This procedure saves manypatients from bypass surgery and is being done only in very few centers alloverIndia,” he said.
