The Jhanki is carried out five to six days ahead of Holi festival and it is believed that in the past epidemic struck Rajouri town whenever Bhairo Jhanki was not carried out.

On the first day of Jhanki today, the Jhanki started from Bhairo Mandi in Nabban Mohalla and after passing through old town and main bazaar, it again culminated at the temple.

Thousands of people, irrespective of age group, caste and religion, took part in the Jhanki to have a glimpse of the youth painted in black.

Meanwhile locals of the Rajouri town expressed their sadness over the demise of Sham Lal, a local resident, who was playing the character of Bhairo Dev in the Jhanki.

They said that Bhairo Jhanki is a living example of communal harmony in the area and Sham Lal was a big reason for this.

On the other hand authorities have made strong security arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of jhanki and its route has also been divided into several zones for proper monitoring.
