Fresh snowfall disrupts normal life in Poonch, Rajouri

Overnight intermittent snowfall in Rajouri and Poonch areas of Jammu and Kashmir led to the closure of the vital roads besides affecting the normal life in the region on Monday.

Majority of the higher reach areas of Rajouri and Poonch received season’s maiden heavy snowfall—resulting in closure of many vital roads besides affecting power supply in many hilly villages.

   

According to eyewitnesses, nine people got injured as a passenger cab slipped on a snow-clad road in Poonch’s Saujiyan.

The Greater Kashmir learnt that in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, snowfall started in all the higher reaches of Rajouri and Poonch districts with higher reaches of Rajouri district including areas of Budhal, Kotranka, Kandi, Thanamandi, Darhal and Bhimber Gali got covered with thick blanket of snow.

Similarly, higher reaches of Poonch district including Mandi, Saujiyan, Loran and upper reaches of Surankote tehsil also received snowfall in the intervening night with snowfall even continued till Monday morning.

Snowfall has also resulted in closure of many vital roads in Rajouri and Poonch districts with efforts to clear the snowfall and to restore the roads for traffic.

“Road from Rajouri district headquarter to Kotranka Budhal got closed on Monday morning due to snowfall at Kandi Mandir Gala with GREF authorities restored the road after snow clearance on Monday evening.” said a police official from Kandi police station.

Deputy SP Traffic Mohammad Zubair Mirza said that road from Thanamandi to Surankote via DKG pass also got closed due to snowfall with road is still lying closed for traffic and vehicular traffic is still suspended.

Meanwhile, nine people received minor injuries in an accident that took place at Sundri area of Saujiyan in Mandi tehsil of Poonch district.

All the passengers however had a narrow escape from life as the Sumo traveller vehicle skidded off the road and fell in a gorge covered with snow and snow cover prevented major injuries to the commuters.

Police said that a Tata Sumo JK12 1646 was on the way to Mandi from Saujiyan when near Sundrinallah driver lost control over the vehicle due to slippery conditions amid snowfall and vehicle skidded and fell in roadside snow covered gorge.

“Nine people received minor injuries in the accident who have been shifted to PHC Saujiyan and are under treatment.” police added.

The government officials from district administrations of Rajouri and Poonch districts also informed that there are no reports of any loss of life or major loss of property.

“There are reports of some partial damages to some kacha houses with confirmed reports shall be clear by Tuesday evening after field verification.” the officials said.

Power supply is also affected in a number of areas of Rajouri and Poonch especially in hilly villages due to damage of power lines and poles with power supply was yet to be restored when last reports poured in.
