In 3 years, MC Rajouri seized only 58 kg of polythene bags

The local Municipal Committee (MC) has managed to seize only 58 kg of Polythene bags in the last 3 years, according to an official letter sent from the Office of the Executive Officer Municipal Committee Rajouri to the Director Urban Local Bodies Jammu.

While the use of polythene bags is a well-known cause of environmental degradation and a blanket ban also stands imposed by the Supreme Court of the country, the locals have lashed out at the local MC for failing to maintain a check on polythene                      bags.

Details with Greater Kashmir revealed that in the past 3 years, only 58 kg of polythene has been seized by the MC, while a meagre Rs 13,100 has been imposed as fine.

In the letter, it is mentioned that in 2015-16, 23 kg of polythene was seized and Rs 6,500 was imposed as fine, while 18 kg of polythene was seized and Rs 4,200 was imposed as fine in 2016-17. The letter goes on to mention that in 2017-18, 17 kg of polythene has been seized and the fine imposed stands at Rs 2,400.

Sources said, “The local MC is hardly paying any attention to the anti-polythene drive.”

An official of the local MC alleged, “Once, a few kg of polythene was seized from the market, but a few traders barged into the office of the MC and took the seized polythene with them. The officers did not even bother to take any action against them.”

Meanwhile, several locals have termed the amount of polythene bags seized as almost nothing. "When there is immediate need of complete check on usage of polythene bags, the MC has only managed to seize 58 KGs in the last three years, which is a mockery," said several locals, including S C Sharma, Nazim Ahmed and Mohammed Javed..

They also said that polythene bags are still available openly on all the shops and with all vendors in Rajouri.
