India, Pakistan exchange fire in Poonch, Akhnoor

Indian and Pakistani forces exchanged gunfire in Shahpur,Kirni and a few other forward areas of Poonch on Monday evening.

Some of the shells landed near civilian areas during thefiring that was on when this report was filed.

   

Jammu-based army spokesman Lt Col Devinder Anand said while Pakistan initiated “unprovoked ceasefire violation” by firing mortars and small, the Indian army was “retaliating strongly and effectively”.

Several areas along the Line of Control in Rajouri and Poonch districts, such as Nowshera, Rajouri, Mendhar Balakote, were calm today. These areas witnessed cross-border firing following tit-for-tat air strikes by India and Pakistan. Several civilians have been killed on both sides in the firing.

The two sides also fired at each other’s positions along theLine of Control (LoC) in Jammu’s Akhnoor area. A defence spokesman saidPakistan fired mortar shells and used small arms but the Indian side retaliated”strongly and effectively”.

He said there were no casualties on the Indian side.

Earlier, amid heightened tensions, army chief General Bipin Rawat reviewed situation along the IB and LoC during his two-day Jammu visit. He reviewed operational preparedness of the forces at 16 Corps headquarters and visited various forward locations of Samba and Ratnuchak along the IB in Jammu region again on Sunday.
