Chaotic scenes were today witnessed in Nowshera town as amid protests in favour of demand for a separate district, a local boy attempted self-immolation after a scuffle with cops.

Sources said a local trader from Nowshera who is reportedly affiliated with the BJP, tried to open his shop. However, the members of Joint Action Committee Nowshera moved to the spot and forced him to close the shop.

"During this, some cops headed by a DSP rank officer standing nearby intervened. The officer and one of the members of the JAC shared heated arguments between themselves and a minor scuffle took place between the cops and the JAC member," local sources said.

They said that irked by the incident, the JAC member namely Rohit Kohli, who is a local trader, attempted self immolation and poured petrol on his body and also swallowed some petrol.

"He was overpowered by other members of the JAC and was rushed to Nowshera hospital where doctors provided him the first aid and later referred him to GMC&H Jammu for treatment," sources informed.

Meanwhile, the bandh in Nowshera continued today and people staged protest against the government.

To mention, the Jammu-Poonch highway was blocked for over eight hours yesterday at Nowshera as a part of ongoing agitation.

The bandh in Kalakote also continued today and the former MLAs of the area namely Thakur Rashpal Singh and Ashok Sharma also sat on dharna in the main town.
