LoC flare-up: Heavy mortar shelling in Lam, Veer Badeshwar, civilian injured

Panic gripped Lam and Veer Badreshwar areas in district Rajouri due to heavy mortar shelling across LoC.

Details with Greater Kashmir revealed that after a lull on Wednesday, firing started at Lam area of Nowshera sector in the district at about 1:20 PM Thursday.

   

“Pakistani troops on the other side of Lam resorted to unprovoked firing with small arms and then used heavy calibre weapons including machine guns. Later, they started fired mortar shells in the area,” a police official said.

He said the areas along LoC including Lam, Pukharni, Thandikassi got affected by the firing.

He informed that at about 2 PM, the firing started at Veer Badreshwar area of Rajouri sector and both small arms firing and heavy mortar shelling started there also.

He said in both these areas, intense mortar shelling continued till 6 PM during which a large number of mortar shells landed in the villages, besides at the forward army posts.

In both Lam and Veer Badreshwar areas, heavy cross border firing and shelling was going on when last reports were received.

CIVILIAN INJURED

Meanwhile, a civilian was injured in the ongoing cross-border firing and shelling in Rajouri district on Thursday.

An official said a civilian identified as Muhammad Iqbal son of Muhammad Riyaz of Pukharni sustained multiple splinter injuries in the shelling that started at 1:20 PM.

He said the injured was grazing cattle in the area when the incident happened.

He was shifted to medical room of a nearby army camp and later taken to sub district hospital Nowshera.

Block medical officer Nowshera, Dr. Mohinder Kumar Sharma, said that soon after the reports of firing on the LoC, two ambulances were rushed to the firing affected areas.
