A 20-year-old boy from Poonch town, who is a student of BA Part II, has made it into the Indian national Volleyball team, which left for Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday, to feature in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) Games to be held from July 17 to 22.

Saqlain Tariq, a resident of Ward 4 of Poonch town, is son of the famous national level volleyball coach Mohammed Tariq, who is presently posted as Physical Education Master at Government High School Marra under Department of Youth Services and Sports. Saqlain’s elder brother, Rameez Tariq, is also a coach in the Department of Youth Services and Sports and a well recognized Volleyball player.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Saqlain’s father said, “Saqlain has been playing Volleyball from childhood. He also participated in 10th Youth Asian Championship (Under 17 year category) held in 2014 in Sri Lanka, where he played as the Indian team captain. Ever since then, he had been working hard to get selected into the Under 21 national team. My son being selected for the national team is a major success for the entire area, not only my family."

"My son plays for the Shaheed Manjeet Singh Memorial Volleyball Club Poonch, where he receives his training and much-needed practice," the father further said.

Meanwhile, thousands of people from across the state extended their wishes while congratulating Saqlain and his family for being selected into the India team for the BRICS Games. "His success will open new doors of development for the sporting community in the area and will also promote sportsmanship,” a man posted on social media, while wishing Saqlain.
