Traffic restored on Mughal road

After remaining closed for eight consecutive days due to heavy snowfall, Mughal road was re-opened for traffic on Thursday.

Authorities were trying to clear the stranded vehicles from the road, before allowing general traffic movement, till last reports poured in.

Executive engineer Mughal road project Maqbool Hussain told Greater Kashmir, “The road stretch from Buflilyaz Surankote to Pir Ki Gali was cleared on late Wednesday evening, while about half-a-kilometre stretch from Pir Ki Galli to Shopian side was cleared on Thursday.”

He added, “As we have cleared 7 metre of the road, width-wise, two light motor vehicles can easily pass simultaneously on the road. The space is still not enough for heavy motor vehicles and thus, we have implemented some restrictions.”

Deputy superintendent of police Surankote Reyaz Ahmed told Greater Kashmir that the first priority is to clear the stranded vehicles. “There were about 104 vehicles stuck in snow on the road. Majority of them have been cleared, but some have developed technical snags due to the accumulation of snow. Authorities and drivers of such vehicles are working and the road will soon be cleared of the remaining vehicles as well,” he said.
