2nd Khelo India Winter Games begins in Gulmarg

The second edition of Khelo India National Winter Games-2021 commenced in Gulmarg on Friday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking Kashmiri youth to come forward in making Jammu and Kashmir a hub of winter sports.

The games are being organised second time in a row at Gulmarg by J&K Sports Council, Winter Games Association of J&K with support of Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

   

Around 800 athletes representing 27 States and Union Territories are participating in the mega event wherein competitions in Skiing, Snowboarding, SnowShoe, Ski Mountaineering, Ice Hockey, Ice Skating and Ice Stock are being held.

Muzamil Hussain Mir bagged first gold medal for J&K on the inaugural day as competitions for two disciplines of SnowShoe and Ski Mountaineering were held. Muzamil bagged first gold medal for J&K in SnowShoe while Menaka Gunjeyal bagged first gold for Uttrakhand in Ski Mountaineering.

In SnowShoe competition of senior men 1500 metre Sprint category was held, Muzamil Hussain Mir bagged gold medal while Suhail Nisar Shah bagged silver for J&K. Sajad Hussain bagged bronze medal for Ladakh. In Ski Mountaineering, Menaka Gunjeyal bagged gold medal in Women’s Sprint Race while Shaani of J&K bagged silver medal and Sheetal of Uttarakhandh bagged bronze medal.

The competitions of Alpine Ski, Nordic Skiing, Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, Ice Stock apart from SnowShoe and Ski Mountaineering will be held on Saturday.

Director General, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Mukund Pradhan, flagged off women players for Sking Mountaineering of Sprint Event at Church slope here.
