MLA Tangmarg and skier Muhammad Abbas Wani was elected President of the Winter Games Association of J&K (WGAJK) at the annual general meeting of the association held at SKICC, here on Saturday.

Wani replaced Secretary Tourism Farooq Ahmad Shah as the President of the Association as the later chose not to contest after completion of his term.

J&K State Sports Council had deputed its member Prof Bashir Ahmad Shah as observer and Col Vivek Jalla of High Altitude Warfare School also acted as observer.

It is for the first time that a skier will be heading the Association which is meant for the promotion of winter sports in the State.

Muhammad Yusuf, a former adventure sports coach in the University of Kashmir, was elected General Secretary while former Asian Winter Games participant, Hafiza Hassan was elected as treasurer.

Former Youth Services and Sports officer, Abdul Rahman Dar was elected Vice-President while as Haji GM Dar and Mir Zahoor Ahmad were elected as Vice-Presidents.

Kishen Chand, GM Parray and Haji Muhammad Amin Zanaskari were elected Joint Secretaries for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Wani, who has represented the State in skiing on number of occasions, thanked members for electing him as President WGAJK.  He said he will work hard to develop the winter games in the State.

“I am skier myself and know this sport. All of you who are here today gave me chance to work for development of this sport in the State. I will try my best to work for its development and welfare of players,” Wani said.

He also praised the outgoing President Farooq Ahmad Shah for his efforts in making the Winter Games popular in the state.

“Nobody can ignore the contribution of Farooq Ahmad Shah in the development of Winter Games in our state. During his time as President of the Association he strived hard to make it popular and also was instrumental in J&K hosting big Winter Game events,” Wani said.

On the occasion, Wani presented a memento to Farooq Ahmad Shah for his contribution to the development of winter sports and running the association smoothly for around a decade.

An award of appreciation was also presented to Arif Khan for his exceptional performance in the International championships.

Shah said WGAJK has performed exceptionally well during his 10 year long tenure.

He said that the association produced many ace skiers who took part in different international level championships in different countries. He appreciated the budding alpine skier Arif Khan, who performed brilliantly in last World Ski championship held in USA and qualified for final run for the first time.

He said that the association organized several National Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing and Snowboarding Championships and won many medals at different age groups.

He also informed the meeting that WGAJK is setting up an academy to promote snow sports at grass root level. The Association has already submitted the project report to Sports Council.

During the meeting all the members felicitated Arif Khan for selection in the forthcoming Asian Winter Games scheduled to be held in Japan in February 2017.
