Gulmarg to host 'mega' winter-games event

The first-ever games of the kind in India include events like alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding for male and female athletes of all age groups, the statement said.

The Winter Games Association of J&K, in collaboration with J&K Tourism, will host a mega winter sporting event at Gulmarg from February 24 to 28, a statement issued here said.

As per the statement, an extraordinary meeting of the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir (WGAJK) was held today which decided to organize the National Snow Sports Games at Gulmarg.

 

The first-ever games of the kind in India include events like alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding for male and female athletes of all age groups, the statement said.

 

“In alpine skiing and snowboarding events competitions will be held in Slalom and Giant Slalom while as in Cross-Country 5 km and 10 km events for women and men respectively will be held. 5 X 4 Km and 10 X 4 Km relays for women and men respectively will be held at Gulmarg and Kongdori from February 24th to 28th”, it said. 

 

The President WGAJK and Director Tourism Farooq Ahmad Shah said that the Championship will be conducted by the Association in collaboration with Tourism Department, J&K Tourism Development Corporation an J&K State Cable Car Corporation.

 

He added that 815 athletes and officials from different parts of the country are expected to take part in the event. 

 

Shah hoped that this kind of a national sporting events “would help revive our winter tourism that has received a big setback due to recent deluge in the valley”. 

 

He said that these Games would coincide with the celebration of “Visit Kashmir – Best of All – All of BestMeanwhile, the Association said the selection trials of the J&K teams will be held at Gulmarg on 22rd and 23rd of this month. “The interested athletes in all age groups, sex and events may report at Tourism Ski Shop. No transport and equipment will be provided by the Association”, it said.
