The only sports field in Kupwara town is in dilapidated condition. The sports ground at Galizoo situated half a kilometer away from the main town is hindering the talent of the young players as it has no facility.
“I am playing cricket here for last 12 years but the condition of this ground is same throughout these years,” said one Ishfaq Ahmad.
He said that the district youth services and sports department Kupwara is continuously organizing cricket tournaments but there is lack of facilities at the ground.
“Last year we were told that within days the work will be started to make it fully functional but it was a joke which the administration is repeating,” he said.
Scores of cricketers told Greater Kashmir that the callous attitude of the administration to provide the basic facilities to sports players of this district has immensely failed the talent here.
The local cricketers claimed that many times the high officials of the administration visited this ground and they assured us that this ground will be turned into a stadium but as usual their cold response has demoralized us. “The sorry state of sports infrastructure here is such that we have only one playground and there is no other playground in the main town and the government has failed to maintain it,” another local Asif Ahmad said.
The local cricket players appealed Government to look into the suffering which hinders their talent.
Chief planning officer Kupwara Mujeeb Ahmad said that the matter is already on priority. “Deputy Commissioner Kupwara has taken this ground in Khelo India program so there will be some investment to make it as per the sports requirements. Work will be accordingly started,” he said.
