U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy: All-round J&K register thumping 247-run win against Tripura

J&K registered another thumping win in the ongoing Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy tournament as they beat Tripura by 247 runs at Country Cricket Stadium Gharota, Jammu on Thursday.

Starting last day’s play with 129 runs for seven wickets, visitors Tripura were bundled out for 165 run total in the second inning, thus handing hosts J&K 247 run win. Govind Sharma wrapped up Tripura inning by picking last three wickets. Javid Ahmad took two while as Rasikh Salam and Mujtaba Yusuf took one each. For Tripura Babul Dey top scored with 28 while as Sankar Paul scored 23.

   

In its second inning, J&K with the help Kanhaiya Wadhwan who made 71 and Musaif Aijaz who scored 56, posted 328 runs on board. Valuable contributions from Govind Sharma (38) and Javid Ahmad (24) ensured J&K to score 300 hundred plus total. At top of the order Qamran Iqbal, Abdul Samad and Jiyaad Magrey had scored 46, 32 and 20 respectively.

Earlier in Tripura’s first inning, brilliant bowling spells by left-arm spinner Javid Ahmad and pacer Mujtaba Yusuf had bundled out Tripura for 148 runs. After Mujtaba rattled the Tripura top order, Javid Ahmad ran through middle and lower order. Javid claimed five wicket haul while as Mujtaba took four. Govind Sharma took one.

In its first inning J&K had scored 232 runs with Musaif top scoring with 61 runs while as Jiyaad scoring 51.

While appreciating his team for the all-round performance, former J&K Ranji trophy player and current coach Asif Majeed said that it is special bunch of future stars that have been doing well for J&K. Asif took charge of J&K longer format recently and has so far helped team to two big wins out of three matches.

“It is great to be part of this group who comprise of some of the future stars of our cricket. It is a wonderful, talented group of players,” Asif said.

“Everyone contributed well. The management has been giving full support to these players. It is outcome of complete all-round show both in and off the field that has helped us to two big wins in the tournament. I am confident we will be doing well in coming matches as well. We have now got excellent chances of qualification,” he added.

J&K earned six points from the match owing to first inning lead. From the three matches, J&K have now got 13 points in the tournament, pushing them to fourth place in the Elite Group C points table.

J&K will next take on Assam on December 10.
